DESIGN PROCESS MODEL

FINAL DESIGN PROCESS MODEL

Feature building

FEATURE BUILDING

Feature building or value addition is the next step. In order to come out with something new or knowing the potholes, value chain analysis plays important role. Filling these potholes is basically done after analysis called value addition. In my design process I also worked on solutions too. In my field visits I also saw some deigns by goodgrips and other such brands. I worked on fire extinguisher and on cutting solutions too. But much focus was on process hence I came up with design process model. And also some of the concepts or ideas are also covered by feature building.

Value chain analysis

VALUE CHAIN ANALYSIS

Value chain analysis is a very important tool in design process. It is tool which to recognize the values of any of the product or strategy. For this it is important to understand which are all the basic values of any product in order that one can add more values into it.

Since my work area is more focused on the injuries caused by fire, cuts electricity and scalding, I took one product from each categories so that I can go further deep. For fire I took fire extinguisher. Similarly for cuts, electricity and scalding I took knife, microwave/OTG and ointment /cream respectively. For each of them value analysis is done according to priorities (From top to bottom/ through tints in color).

Stakeholder analysis

STAKEHOLDER ANALYSIS

In stakeholder analysis I have considered all kinds of users, employees, owners, policy makers, etc dealing with kitchen. Since I have four issues, each of them has different stakeholders. They also have some common stakeholders. For each four different colors are used. In the center there is user and around it are four different kitchen hazards with four different bands. The closest band consists of first or main users and last band consists of users who are remotely involved in it (light to dark color bands).

So before coming out with something, I searched about kitchen hazards and problems. Also very basic first aid is always necessary to know. Here is a small video compiled by me showing some basic solutions to problems.

Identifying the cause of problems

So my problem statement changed to 'Injuries caused by fire, cuts electricity and scalding'. So the next step was to sketch the problems or the reasons or cause of these accidents in kitchen which leads to these four injuries. So here are some major reasons explaining why these accidents happen in kitchen through sketches and write up.

Wednesday 20 April 2016

PROBLEM STATEMENT :

So from the problem assessment matrix it can be seen that most of the hazards that take place in terms of injuries, negligence or also may lead to death are cased because of cuts and fire (Red dot in matrix). But overall this ratio is very less. On the contrary, the percentage between 60-100% has more occurrence in matrix. It can be seen that most of the kitchen accidents or hazards are caused because of negligence and leads to injuries.(Excluding FLOOR where rate of injuries are comparatively less i.e 40%)

Hence redefining the problem statement as -Injuries caused because of fire, cuts, electricity and scalding in kitchen.

Based on the collected information, the problem assessment matrix have been plotted. each of the five five categories have something in common such as knowledge, negligence, injuries, occurrence, misuse of the object, etc. The information is plotted after seeing the surveys and research conducted by some or other source as well as from my assumption.

PROBLEM ASSESSMENT MATRIX

So the next step was to plot a problem assessment matrix. For this i collected all the information available from the various surveys. So i had five categories. Based on it my matrix will be plotted. The data collected was through the surveys.
Fire accidents are common and lot of people die every year. Major reasons for it being:

·       1.Unattended cooking was the leading factor in home cooking fires.

·       2.Two-thirds (66%) of home cooking fires started with the ignition of food or other cooking materials.

·        3. Clothing was the item first ignited in less than 1% of these fires, but these incidents accounted for 18% of the cooking fire deaths.

·         4.Ranges or cooktops accounted for the majority (61%) of home cooking fire incidents. Ovens accounted for 13%.

·         5.More than half (54%) of reported non-fatal home cooking fire injuries occurred when the victims tried to fight the fire themselves.

The above information is from the survey conducted by NFPA (National Fire Protection Association)

SAFETY

Zooming on to the safety issues in kitchen, there are many accidents which occur every year. With restaurants and local hotels increasing every year, the accidents are also increasing. Commercial and home kitchens are two main categories. I have taken home kitchen accidents.

These(above) words related to each other in some or other commonness. Hence I did 5 categories. They were FIRE, CUTS, ELECTRICITY, SCALDING AND FLOOR. I highlighted two categories ‘fire’ and ‘cuts’. This is because while reading, I found that these are major reasons responsible for accidents. This is also proved by various surveys conducted by few countries.

So my next step is too zoom in further and getting more info in depth about 'fire' and 'cuts'.

One of the major problem faced by almost everyone in kitchen is deep and in accessible cabinets. They have to kneel or sit to take out containers or any such accessories.

1. Cabinets are deep and if someone wants to access containers deep inside, one has to shuffle everything.

2. For compact kitchens less space will be available for future.

How circular design can help…

In case of circular design more space is available because it surrounds the space and hence no need of such deep cabinets.

DESK WORK

So my problem statement was fixed. The next step was to find the scope of improvement and analyzing the scene in depth so as to come out with something. So I started with my desk work. I came across few good things. But still I wanted to go deep. Initially I didn’t focus on my problem statement so that I could use freedom thinking that something good will come out. Kitchen in itself is a very broad term. It has different shapes, interiors and also different accessories for different types of kitchen.

Deciding on a layout for a kitchen is probably the most important part of kitchen design. It's the layout of the kitchen and not its color or its style that determines how easy it is to cook, eat and socialize in the kitchen. At the most basic level, the layout addresses the placement of the appliances, the sink, the cabinets, the counters, the windows and doors, and furniture such as a kitchen table and chairs. If you're building a new home or adding on, you have the luxury of choosing the layout that works best for you and your family. If you're remodeling, the structure of the existing home will limit the options.

The most common kitchen layouts include the one-wall kitchen, the galley kitchen, the U-shaped kitchen, the G-shaped kitchen, and the L-shaped kitchen some of which can also incorporate an island.

So there are many types of kitchen. Initially to start with i choose simple home kitchen.

FIELD STUDY

I took a example of common man kitchen not too sophisticated                    and not so poor too. I noticed few of things.

1. ACCESSIBILITY

In Future with population and space, kitchen will be more compact. So how it could be made accessible in terms of space and usability ?

Here is a small illustration and animation done with help of google sketchup.

It is often observed that these corners are not used and only the cabinets near to table is used.

These corners can be treated and made more accessible by giving them curve. Though this plan, it can be inferred that circular design or curves are more accessible and can also save the space as well as provide more space for women to work

ADVANTAGE

1. IMPORTANT FOR FUTURE WHERE KITCHENS WILL BE SMALL.

2. CIRCULAR KITCHEN IS MORE ACCESSIBLE KEEPING THE AREA SAME AND THUS PROVIDING MORE SPACE FOR WORK.

3. ALSO WHEN KITCHEN SCALE IS BIG (IN HOTELS, CAFETERIA,ETC) SPACE CAN BE USED IN BETTER WAY.

4. ALSO KEEPING THE AREA SAME, AS COMPARED TO CUBOID ROOM, CIRCULAR SPACE APPEARS MORE OPEN.

Hence for future, coming up with circular kitchen is very good solution when it comes to accessibility especially when rooms will be small

NATION SAFETY

Initially I started with searching the problems and solving it. The very first thought that came in my mind was searching problem and then solving it. But the thing I was missing was the steps in middle. There is also zooming in and zooming out in a scenario.

According to me Design Process is series of steps that may or may not come with some final product. But this also leaves an idea or step for future. Design process may not always come out giving proper solution or results in feasible solution. In this important is process and how one observes the scenario and till what extent.

Also where I went wrong was not going in deep and thinking on surface and working on obvious thought.

Then I realized that its better not to think about anything and take any wide scenario and working on it. So I took much broad perspective i.e. NATION'S SAFETY. I wrote all the words that triggered in mind and started with brain storming process.

NATION SAFETY

I took this as my scenario since its wide and considering nations safety in present context. I took post it and started putting them around my scenario.

The other step is to categorize the words according to the field and organizing them. The process was focused now on zooming in and once categorizing is over then again taking taking one subject. So while following this step i came across two three interesting categories or scenario like home, digital and current. these were the three topics I wanted to work. But from here one can start visualizing about scenario and what all things can be explored in it. So I took home as category and again went deep. Them finally I landed on kitchen. i started with safety and i zoomed in a lot and finally choose my work area as Kitchen. Also kitchen has tools, furniture, layouts, etc. and this was my work of interest.

So now that my work area is final the next step is to find scope in it and to define it by through statement. In design process there is no such definition from approach. But for start one may follow these steps.

INITIAL STATEMENT- COMING UP WITH BETTER KITCHEN SOLUTIONS
